It's tempting to attribute the enhanced glow to the 
higher impedence of your "heavy" cell, although the 
difference in voltage is pretty small. As you say,
the mystery is why a heavy cell would have a higher
impedence to begin with. That's new to me, and 
as far as I know it's not been reported in the
CF literature ( where a great deal of "compare heavy + light"
electrolysis is done ). If you can score a piece
of platinum wire try to measure the half potential
and see if the additional voltage drop is at the
anode or the cathode. I assume the former, but
we won't know until you try. At some point I'll
get around to messing with the heavy stuff and I
can try a replication, that may be sooner than
later as I'm feeling comfortable enough in my
understanding of the anodizing process in general
to be able to do some kind of reasonable experiment.
