You can actually see the mumetal if you go 200%.  Also, there are holes in the drive shaft which drive the gating.  Some kind of black plastic thingy.

Ackshully, I have it backwards (as usual - I think I caught lysdexia from Beene).  The shield is *raised* by the mechanism and lowered by Newton's Apple.
