[NewCandle] New evidence of giant gravitomagnetism

I'm guessing my memory needs to be refreshed, as I
don't recall what wobble you speak of.
What I did included some static testing, taking the
ring up and down through Tc, with and without external
fields applied, field cooling vs. no field cooling.
The rotating tests were done in a novel little
cryo-puck where the LN2 and the ring could be rotated
as one, with stationary thermal shielding (foam)
above. Top speeds were probably about 3600 rpm.
The suspended test mass was a glass ampoule of about
60 grams of molybdenum trioxide (which has a magnetic
susceptibility that is close to null. The test mass
was in an isolated snout or flight tube, and attached
to an old Ainsworth vacuum balance with a practical
resolution of 100 micrograms. The whole experiment
could thus be moved back and forth under the snout and
thermal shielding.
The only interesting result from that whole era came a
couple of months later, when I had taken the YBCO
ring, and had wrapped a set of toroidal windings
around it. One afternoon, I found a combination of
currents, chilling, and impressed constant field from
a ring magnet that actually appeared to cause a
deviation (loss) in the test mass weight by about .3
milligrams. I was elated. I repeated the effect
again, and yet again the next afternoon. However it
then proceeded to go away. The following day -
nothing. I spent the next three months of lunch hours
and Saturdays trying to retrace my steps. Nada. It
was heartbreaking. Many months later, I came to
suspect that an internal crack may have developed,
disrupting some current or other. The ring eventually
broke into a number of pieces.
I can't say it isn't something that wouldn't be fun to
go back to with a fresh ring... but that little 4"
number cost over $1000 back in the day. And my old
benefactor, Dr. McMaster is no longer around... So
its beyond my reach anymore, cost wise - plus the
Ainsworth balance died a couple years back, with no
repair parts possible.
But hey... these days I am thinking about vacuum
propellers.
