[NewCandle] Interlude - something different

Rock on, Nick.

A thought about the "big rock/high tone, small rock/low tone" mystery.

Clearly these rocks are high Q resonators, although it's difficult
to tell what modes you would be exciting due to the odd shapes involved.
It's tempting to propose this as the explanation, but I think
it might be something simpler but related.

Consider one of the smaller rocks. You get a clear, low tone,
from which you could probably get an estimate of the wavespeed
in the material. Most of the energy is in that mode, so that's
what you hear. Now take a larger rock. There is still a lower
order mode, but now it's so low that you wouldn't be able
to hear it at all. Also, the Q at such a low frequency may
be poorer. But what you will hear now are the higher harmonics.
As you show in the Fourier analysis, the complex shape gives
rise to many different higher order modes. In a big rock,
these modes are low enough in frequency to be heard.

It's been reported that subsonic sounds can cause certain
physical effects, like nausea, headache, etc. This might
explain the ill effects reported by people whacking away at
(certain) stones. I might expect there are a couple of "magic" ones
that ring at the right low freq that would cause everyone around
to feel ill, without knowing why...

It's also the case that using a small hammer to sound the
rocks will put less energy into a lower frequency mode than
a higher one. Think sledgehammer for the big ones.

The temptation for me would be great to pick out
a tuned set of rocks for the backyard. A sort of Flintstonian
xylophone, gets everyone at your next gig stoned!

I'm not a geologist, so I won't speculate on how the bed
was formed. As far as life being present on the rocks, it
sounded like monkeys were crawling all over the place! (grin).
The place seems to be a magnet for them. How much more life do you need?

K.

After much ado, my webmaster finally put up a little
research paper I generated a month or so ago, dealing
with a geological anomaly and "earth mystery" site of
a traditional sort in Pennsylvania - Home O' The
Weird.

For fun and adventure only:

Now back to crystals and gravity...
