************** oh wow.  Now there's an interesting
pickle.  Let me spend some quality time with my CRC
manual over the next day or so and maybe something
will jump out at me.  The Gee Whiz in me says
"magnetically, magnetically!" but I've no idea how
paramagnetic the two hydroxides are compared to each
other.  Another guess would be something that would
reduce the one before the other, but that would be
destructive, so let me consult the grimoires.

Actually Nick, that sounds like just what I need
( something which reduces one without the other ).
For that matter, I could work with most any other
salt, the hydroxide/oxide mix is just a
convenient intermediate form to work with.
