Keith,

> But my point with the beetle was the secretory cells that produce
the H2O2. They claim 25% concentration, in the nabe you were writing
about for your application. I wonder what their secret is?

No secret - as for chemical stability, or for how to manufacture peroxide in situ, at least . We have found that HOOH up to ~45% concentration is difficult to trigger, and safe for use in automotive near a hot engine.

Above 50% it can be quite risky however, and it is corrosive at almost any concentration- but that is probably the biggest issue that "evolution" (or ID) had to contend with for the beetle.

Unlike Dawkins, I see no problem with "ID," as a substitute and "natural divinity" using evolution, and billions of years, as an instrumentality. After all, what is a few billion years anyway? Success is all that matters and time-be-damned.

To continue the beetle analogy, the religious-right, like you computer software industry, should learn to convert "bugs" in their mind-control programs into "features" <g>

BTW - did you notice the recent press about life on Mars?

Formerly we had been looking for water-based life. Now the scientists are suggesting that at least in the later stages of evolution on Mars (last hundred million years or so - after Mars had cooled significantly), all single celled life could have been peroxide-based. The 25% concentration you mention above lowers the freezing point of the mixed liquid by 50 C. so that life could be maintained in extreme cold, just under a protective surface layer of surface dust (to protect from UV).

Keith - FWIW --- ALL of the newcandle messages are caught by my SPAM filter, despite the "learning" feature. After numerous complaints, my isp has admitted that the problem is that your isp is apparently very tolerant of SPAM mass-mailers and is on their black-list. But they (ATT -Yahoo) will not go on public record for saying that. Go figure.
