AFAIK - and this is a big statement - all cells in both plants and
animals can and do make HOOH as part of normal metabolism and do so in
small amounts by superoxidizing water with oxygen, even anaerobic
bacteria (the oxygen does not come from air but from CO2) -- but --
cells do this in small quantities and "just in time" as a predecessor to
such necessary chemicals as ADP. HOOH is toxic in larger enrichment, but
paradoxically is as ubiquitous and necessary as water, otherwise.

BTW oxygen itself will technically NOT support combustion ! It must be
changed first into an ROS, such as HOOH or ozone first. This can be
accomplished in picoseconds, so the fine distinction in semantics is
often not realized.

You know about ADP and the "energy cycle, no? I am no biologist but have
read that ADP absolutely requires peroxide to make, and most plant and
animal cells use the very same manganese oxide as the catalyst to do
this- first make the HOOH - and then the APD secondarily, but in the
case of beetles etc. they have just "figured out" the way to store it as
a defensive instead of reacting it further.

Surprised the Pentagon hasn't looked into this <g>
